Lee Kyunghwa received her B.A. (2002) in Visual Design and Art History from Seoul National University (SNU), as well as her M.A. (2005) and Ph.D. (2016) in Art History from the same institution.
Her doctoral thesis examined how Kang Se-hwang, a leading literati painter of the late Joseon period, developed his identity as an artist within the constraints of rigid Confucian social-ethical values.
Her research continues to expand and currently encompasses the history of Korean literati painting, true-view landscape painting, portraiture in Joseon Korea, museum studies and art collections in colonial Korea.
She is currently a research professor at the Institute of Honam Studies at Chonnam National University, a lecturer at Seoul National University, and an expert member of the National Heritage Committee.
